In the last few weeks, my self-perception has been challenged. With the recent familial visit and barrage of Facebook tags from old cohorts, it’s been hard not to face how different I am. Even at the most basic, most obvious levels. I rang the hospital to speak to my godmother and I sounded so Australian. Like, I literally could not make myself sound more Malaysian, to reduce the confusion already wrought by the language barrier between myself and the nurse, worsened by the crackly transpacific line. My physical measurements have barely budged since the dawn of puberty, but whilst uploading shameless selfies, I was struck by how the severity of the planes of my face, in contrast to the youthful, apple-cheeked girl immortalised by a 3.2 megapixel Sony Eriksson phone camera.

I still miss and love so many friends back in Malaysia. Yet often contact brings feelings of brief happiness, followed by nostalgia and sadness, having to acknowledge the vast plains between us. My points of view have evolved to accommodate the culture of my new land. Kah Soon’s music recommendations no longer pique my interest. I don’t listen to sad music anymore. I’m in a functional relationship, with a boy that gives me little grief. I hardly write anymore, because anguish fuels my writing and my supplier is a poor one. I’m no longer uncomfortable around substances and people once regarded illicit. I do housework. I drive. I no longer squirrel away money for uncertain times, not that there are non looming, but maybe because I’ve tired of being the sensible, reliable one and for one fucking time in my life, I would like to have some fun.

I still can’t cook. At least that one thing remains constant.

It’s midnight and I have work in 6 hours. I’m lying in bed and pondering: I can’t believe there...
